NYX has had a solid presence in the industry and in the stocks of everyone who loves makeup, and the NYX Butter Gloss is a classic among us. Some people enjoy their foundations, liquid eyeliners, pencils, soft matte, or their different array of gloss formulas.
NYX has a line of staple items that still hold a place in many makeup lovers’ hearts. Maybe NYX isn’t one of the trendiest TikTok brands, but they don’t need to be. They’ve been around for ages with affordable prices and have a loyal and growing fanbase.
Bottom Line Up Front
The NYX Butter Gloss was the gloss of my life when it came out. As the years passed, I grew more demanding, and other brands came out with more advanced formulas, but this product line still has some of the best colors on the market. The great price helped cement the NYX Butter Gloss as a timeless classic.

Meet the NYX Butter Gloss
I’ve loved NYX for years and years, happy when they first were introduced to the European market. Among my first NYX purchases was the Butter Gloss, so this is a product very close to my heart. I did choose it in a different shade back then, as I wanted a more nude, glossy one rather than the one I am reviewing today. This says a lot about my journey in makeup tastes and choices over time.
My first shade was Fortune Cookie which is still around today. Fortune Cookie was such a gorgeous shade that I emptied the bottle entirely before getting anywhere near the expiry date.
The poor thing only lasted a few months because I used it so much. The only reason I didn’t rebuy it was that I wanted to try other NYX formulas. That was during my first time seeing NYX on the shelves, back in the days of the first YouTube makeup boom.
A Classic Gloss
Along with the soft matte lip cream, I’d say the Butter Gloss is a very known staple and one which I don’t think NYX would be getting rid of any time soon.
This is one of those classic options, so I am reviewing a true classic for first-time buyers or others who may have overlooked it. Also, because it has such a wide range of colors, it’s hard to stop looking and choose one, as if it were a box of delicious chocolates.
Did it Withstand the Trial of Time?
This is what I found interesting. The amount of gloss in the bottle still feels little. The finish feels like it could be glossier since many of us opt to put lipgloss as the final touch.
Many people judge the classic MAC bullet lipstick, and I guess I might be one with the Butter Gloss by NYX.
I feel like there are brighter alternatives and with the sudden turn to looking after our skin and lips, I wish there was more softening lip value or the texture was a bit more smooth. Maybe I just got used to different finishes and more light-feeling gloss?
The Shade I Chose
Despite my eternal fondness for Fortune Cookie, I decided to look at my makeup arsenal when picking a shade. My lipstick collection fills a whole drawer with makeup, which scares people who are not as enthusiastic as I am.
I wanted to try a more cool pink tone gloss called Angel Food Cake (following the classic theme of food when it comes to this line) which I would be able to put over my lipstick.
For this review, I started by wearing a lip liner and gloss. I don’t really wear lipsticks or gloss without liner these days, but I did different tests to see how it would feel.
As mentioned above, the NYX Butter Gloss feels a bit dated once the nostalgia begins to fade. The color is gorgeous, and despite coming from a few collections back, it feels very modern and something I will be reaching again and again.
It’s what I wanted in color, but I wish it was glossier as I’ve got another gloss that shines more while this is a safer, albeit cute version.
Packaging
The packaging is very similar to the NYX Soft Matte lip cream. This always forces me to look at both and ensure I didn’t grab the wrong one. Butter Gloss has the illusion of being more light-looking, as the lid remains the same color as the rest of the packaging.
The packaging is minimalistic, but the Butter Gloss being a staple of the NYX portfolio, I don’t think it needs to aim for more. If it were to suddenly change aesthetic, the fans would probably complain.
Application
Since I enjoy seeing extreme gloss, I do quite a few swipes or applications from the tube. The packaging is cute and chic, but it requires dipping quite a few times unless you want a more minimalistic look, which is rarely something I go for.
It didn’t change over the years, so it’s exactly the same as you remember it and very straightforward with its cute applicator and the same packaging. I do have to say that it’s handy to take around, even in your pocket.
Durability
Like most glosses, it doesn’t last the whole day and eventually will fade out, but it won’t do it drastically. So long as you’re not eating, you’re covered. I used a lip liner underneath to bring out more of my lips, which could’ve altered the results.
When wearing the NYX Butter Gloss by itself, I prefer to reapply, and I can do it blindly, so it’s not a big issue for me.
Availability
This is something that I found very unusual. Here in Portugal, I had to go to drugstore makeup shops such as Wells. The largest NYX reseller in Portugal, Perfumes & Compania, did not have it. Many official retailers weren’t offering the Butter Gloss, so I had to think outside the box. I found it in a place I barely expected it to be.
If you live in the USA, I recommend going to your drug store or a ULTA store. In the United Kingdom, Beauty Bay holds nearly every makeup holy grail. I feel like this lapse in not being able to find the Butter Gloss is a pure Portugal issue.
Also, I wanted to point out that the Butter Gloss is only available in its classic formula today. Crowd pleasers like the Intense Butter Gloss have been discontinued, but the color payoff is still great if you choose the right shade.
Pros
- Small and not bulky packaging
- Staple
- Great color payoff
Cons
- There are more nourishing glosses out there
- Feels a bit little quantity-wise
Dupes
When looking at dupes, I also looked for cool mauve lipglosses to widen the range, as well as my personal experiences with different types of glosses from other brands and whatnot. NYX does claim it as a true mauve.
Due to my shade choice, it was rather hard to find direct dupes with the same color or similar consistencies. I couldn’t find similar items in my favorite formulas, so I had to dig among other familiar brands.
Too Faced Lip Injection in Glossy & Bossy
Plumping lip glosses are making a comeback, so no wonder Too Faced still reigns with their Lip Injection line. I thought this would be a unique addition to follow the trend. Regardless of whether you have botox, sometimes you feel like you need your lips to have extra oomph, and usually, the plumping lip glosses do that.
Back when I first started wearing them, my classmates would complain that they did not enjoy the formulas because of the weird tingling feeling on their lips. That’s why they didn’t take off as much even today, but plumping glosses are still a fun addition without any harm.
As for the color, it’s warmer than NYX Angel Food Cake Butter Gloss, but a decent dupe nonetheless. It’s a bit on the pricier and usual brand of Sephora, but if you want a treat, Too Faced is the one with the pretty plump.
Pros
- Immediately shows plump and even lips
- Full glossy coverage
- Colour payoff
Cons
- Not everyone likes plumping glosses and their sensation
- Not as sheer as NYX
Jeffree Star Supreme Gloss in Cookie Dough Fetish
I honestly thought that with the colors available, Jeffree Star would have a more direct dupe. If you want less mauve, Jeffree Star offers an alternative with a cheeky but food-related name. It has a much better color payoff as well as more glossiness.
He might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but everyone has been so scandalous in the past years that I don’t know where to look. The Supreme Gloss has a great formula and excellent value. I would recommend it more to Europeans because it’s easier to get through local retailers instead of ordering from the official store.
But then, I just enjoy buying many things at once and not focusing on one specific brand. The Supreme Gloss has more payoff than his other gloss line, but both are great.
Pros
- Extreme payoff
- Durability
- One swipe
Cons
- Weird applicator
- Very full coverage, unlike the NYX one
Tarte Cosmetics Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm in Hibiscus
I wasn’t sure about this exact formula as it felt sheer to me initially. However, a few swipes later, I discovered that it is buildable. Remember that this is a balm mix, so it’s meant to be far sheerer than a regular gloss, even if the color matches the NYX Butter Gloss.
The Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm also has healing purposes. In this era, when we prefer to have healthy makeup, this is a pricy but worthy alternative to Butter Gloss. But your lips will thank you, as we tend to wear a lot of makeup and the weather is not always friendly. Tarte is consistent and never disappoints with the essentials, so this was a pleasant find.
Pros
- Moisturizing benefits
- Rich in positive ingredients
- Comes in a mini size as well
Cons
- Sheer takes a while to build up
- The price is high for a balm mix
Tarte H2O Lip Gloss in Room Service
For Tarte, this is quite a saucy name. It still matches the sea theme of this collection, so I’ll let them run with it. If you want a more classic gloss by Tarte, go for the H2O.
This is a pure gloss with a similar shade as NYX Butter Gloss in Angel Food Cake but with the deluxe Tarte treatment. It has different nourishing properties, something Tarte is known and loved for well, and they reflect on the higher cost. This lip gloss is a simple but effective product, which is why I love it.
Pros
- Rich in ingredients to moisturize and keep lips in check
- Cute sea minimalistic packaging
- Very glossy mirror shine
Cons
- Feels a bit medical
- Outside of sales, a bit expensive for one gloss
KVD Vinyl Lip Cream Gloss in Carnation
I’ve made no secret that I enjoyed the interlude of KVD Beauty immediately after Kat left, while the brand was still trying to find a new identity. The result was an array of crazy formulas and names, matching durable and beautiful products.
This is on the tail end of that era, as they didn’t release much, but the KVD Vinyl Lip Cream Gloss in Carnation is a fun dupe and alternative to the NYX Butter Gloss in Angel Food Cake. I seem to be aiming for more nourishing lip items. This one is no exception. I highly recommend this formula as it has excellent value and could be worn alone or on top of lipstick if you’re extra, which is always admirable.
Pros
- One swipe
- Nourishing properties
- Stays on well
Cons
- Hard to track down at times
- Pricey still
Rimmel London Oh My Gloss! Purrr… Glossy Cat
Well, this is the first unique name after all the sexual and food innuendos, so I’ll give it to Rimmel for surprising me with the odd title. The shade in question is a tad lighter than a pure desired dupe for the NYX Butter Gloss in Angel Food Cake. But when it comes to glosses with no extra steps, I would place Rimmel very high on the list.
Rimmel is hard to beat if you don’t want any further moisturizing or get an allergic reaction from the tall list of ingredients. This is a gorgeous gloss that does not hurt the wallet. I’ve always loved Rimmel glosses and still do. Rimmel London may be hard to find in Europe now, but once you find it, it’s a jackpot.
Pros
- Very straightforward gloss
- Friendly price
- Long mileage of usage
Cons
- Hard to find at times in stores
- The packaging isn’t my thing
Revolution Pro All That Glistens Hydrating Lip Gloss in Seduction
There’s also a wallet-friendly sparkly alternative if you feel like you want some glitter in your next lip gloss choice. Makeup Revolution and its endless branches leave a bunch of questions for many. Still, they’ve got great products that are the heart of the British makeup industry if you ask the people.
This formula is nourishing without being Sephora pricing and lasts a nice while. It may not be a perfect match, but it looks similar, sparkles, and is cute. All That Glistens works with both a night and day look. You can wear it by itself or on top of a lip pencil and lipstick.
Pros
- Doesn’t break the bank
- Cute shimmers
- Good quality
Cons
- The formula could have been more nourishing
- Needs reapplication often

NYX Intense Butter Gloss Review: Final Thoughts
My biggest lesson is that this color is unique! It was unexpectedly hard to find dupes, which reminded me of why I chose this classic gloss in this color in the first place. I wanted something unique, and I got exactly that.
It’s not the best lip gloss formula in the universe, as we have developed more lightweight and nourishing things. Living through 2020 shifted our makeup obsession into a self-care light, where we value how our lips feel after a long day. But if you ask whether this lip gloss is worth it based exclusively on the color, I say absolutely. I have no regrets about my choice.
I tend to run my NYX glosses to the ground and then jump onto another shade, just because I like variety. I believe this will be well used and loved until it runs out. I do wish they would come in bigger sizes, but then maybe their appeal of them would be lost? Maybe.
